Let’s be honest when you're juggling a million things as a small business owner, it’s easy for the financial side of things to fall to the bottom of the to-do list. But carving out a little time at the end of each month to review your finances can save you a whole lot of stress, confusion, and even money down the road.
As a bookkeeper who works with small business owners just like you, I know firsthand how powerful this routine can be. It's not just about being "tax-ready" (though that’s a huge bonus). It’s about gaining clarity, staying in control, and making better decisions for your business.
Here’s my go-to End-of-Month Financial Checklist—designed to keep your books clean, your goals on track, and your stress level low:
✅ Reconcile All Bank and Credit Card Accounts
Make sure your books match what your bank and credit card statements show. Catching discrepancies early prevents bigger headaches later. It’s also a great way to spot fraud or double charges.
✅ Follow Up on Outstanding Invoices
Unpaid invoices can stall your cash flow. Don’t let that money slip through the cracks—follow up with clients and document communication. Consider implementing automated reminders if this is a recurring issue.
✅ Categorize and Record All Business Expenses
Keep those receipts handy and make sure every expense is logged and categorized properly. Doing this regularly ensures accurate reporting and maximizes your deductions when tax time rolls around.
✅ Review Your Profit & Loss (P&L) Statement
Your P&L gives you a snapshot of your income vs. expenses. This report is gold when it comes to spotting trends, adjusting your strategy, and staying on top of your goals.
✅ Set Aside Funds for Taxes
Avoid the “surprise tax bill” by setting aside a percentage of your income each month. I recommend using a separate savings account specifically for taxes so you’re not tempted to spend it.
✅ Back Up Your Financial Records
Whether you're using cloud accounting software or spreadsheets, make sure everything is backed up—preferably in more than one location. Technology isn’t perfect, and neither are we.
✅ Compare Your Budget vs. Actual Performance
Your budget is your financial roadmap, but how closely are you following it? This check-in can reveal where you're overspending, underperforming, or crushing it—so you can adjust accordingly.
Pro Tip:
Doing these tasks monthly (instead of waiting until year-end) makes your life so much easier. You’ll be more organized, more confident in your numbers, and more strategic with your business decisions.
Running a business isn’t easy—but you don’t have to do it all alone. If you’re tired of scrambling through your finances at the last minute or just want some peace of mind, let’s chat. I’d love to help you simplify your systems and set you up for long-term success.
